Undergraduate Expectations
For admission to the graduate programs, a bachelor's degree in physics (or a physics and mathematics background equivalent to that required for a B.S. in physics) is required. Normally, the minimum acceptable GPA is 3.0/4.0. While the GRE General examination is required, no minimum score is specified, as each case is reviewed on its own merits. Admission preference will be given to those submitting a strong GRE Advanced Physics score.
Undergraduate preparation assumed: Fowles, Analytical Mechanics; Griffiths, Electromagnetism; Eisberg and Resnick, Quantum Physics for Atoms, Molecules, Solids, Nuclei and Particles; Griffiths, Introduction to Quantum Mechanics; advanced undergraduate laboratory; mathematics including differential equations, vector calculus, and linear algebra. Students with a limited number of course work deficiencies may make these up during the first year of attendance.
